Alpha & Omega Group was selected in 1999 by the North Carolina Department of Natural Resources State Parks for the Civil and Structural Engineering of the floating swing-span bridge (Phase I, 1999-2006) and the Visitor Center (Phase II, 2006-2008).
The bridge was designed as an 85-foot floating, large swing-span bridge with two 15-foot bascule spans, and a 36-foot two-span continuous fixed approach bridge. The bridge was engineered to allow access to the west side of the canal providing pedestrian and vehicular access to the Dismal Swamp Visitor Center. It’s unique design provides safe passage for pedestrians, park maintenance vehicles and emergency/rescue vehicles. The swing, floating span gives priority passage to marine vessels transiting the canal from Deep Creek, Virginia to South Mills, NC, almost 20 nautical miles.
The Visitor Center is located at the Dismal Swamp on the west side of the Dismal Swamp Canal. The Dismal Swamp Canal is on the National Historical Record.
