Alpha & Omega Group was selected in 1999 by the NCDENR Division of Parks & Recreation for the Civil and Structural Engineering of the floating swing-span bridge Phase I, and, Phase II, the Visitor Center. The Visitor Center is located in the Dismal Swamp on the west side of the Dismal Swamp Canal. The Great Dismal Swamp is the largest remaining swamp in the Eastern United States and listed on the National Historic Record.
The Visitor Center’s elements of service include grading, erosion control, parking design, roadway design, domestic water service, sanitary septic system, building design, state and federal environmental permitting, coordination with the US Coast Guard and construction administration.
The excavated soil material resulting from the construction of the canal was deposited on the west side of the canal, providing the high ground needed for the siting of the Visitor Center. The building was constructed on timber piles directly adjacent to the canal to provide appropriate aesthetics for a structure located within such an environmentally historic area.
