In March of 2011, A&O provided an NBIS Inspection and a structural condition assessment of the Emerald Isle Bridge located in the southern Bogue Banks providing access from the mainland to Emerald Isle across the Intracoastal Waterway.
The bridge consists of 59 spans of varying lengths of prestressed precast concrete AASHTO girders with a center “drop-in” span. The superstructure is supported by cast-in-place reinforced concrete post and beam piers on pile caps and prestressed precast piles. The overall length of the bridge is approximately 4,612 feet.
Alternate decks were sampled for chloride penetration and each bridge component was core sampled for compressive strength, and chloride penetration. Petrographic analysis was performed to determine carbonation, mineralogy and microstructure of the concrete and aggregates.
