In 2006, Alpha & Omega Group provided structural and civil design services for the 22,000 sf Coastal Education Center at the historic, Fort Macon site in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina.
The 22,000 square foot Coastal Education Center includes massive exposed timber roof trusses using reclaimed timbers, steel framing and masonry shear walls.
The civil aspects of the Center include a 4,000 gallon rainwater reclamation cistern for irrigation, permeable paver walks, and grading limitations of 40-feet beyond building perimeter and 10-feet beyond walkways and utilities. Also, potable water and sanitary utilities were extended to the facility. Low emission and fuel efficient parking spaces were part of the LEED certification.
The Center was designed as a Green building, and ultimately achieved LEED Gold Certification, from the US Green Building Council.
