UNCH selected A&O to provide structural engineering services for a new high density filing system in the pharmacy at the UNC Hospital. The project required investigation of the existing structural system and the design of supports for new HVAC rooftop units.
A&O provided structural engineering services to analyze the existing floor structure to determine adequacy to support the additional load of the proposed filing system. Our scope included: field investigation to determine the size and spacing of the existing structural framing; coordination with UNCH regarding the proposed filing system size, weight, and location; analysis of existing building framing; design and preparation of construction drawings for strengthening of existing structure; and site observation of construction for the structural framing.
A new structural framing system was required to accommodate the new HVAC rooftop units. The galvanized framing system utilized the existing columns to distribute the loads through the existing building.
