Historic Preservation

Historic preservation is a protective endeavor that seeks to observe, preserve and conserve buildings, objects, landscapes or other artifacts of historical significance. As civil and structural engineers, A&O partners with local counties, municipalities, and architects to evaluate the civil and structural aspects of significant structures that need to be renovated or restored.

Some Structures have Significance that Stands
the Test of Time. A&O finds ways to make them Stand Longer.

Historic preservation services include structural evaluation, repairs, renovations, or expansions to existing historic buildings and other structures across North Carolina. A&O works closely with architects and the State Historic Preservation Office to provide the appropriate structural detailing necessary to maintain the historic character and integrity of the original construction.

Often there are no plans for these structures and in-depth field investigations are needed to determine materials of construction, framing, load paths, foundations, and condition of structural elements. There may also be a need for a preservation contractor to assist in removal of portions of wall coverings or siding to determine extent of damage and configuration of framing.
