A&O was requested by NCDOT to design a replacement bridge. The original was constructed in 1963 that crosses a tributary of Deep Creek on NC Secondary Route 1003 (Moonlight Road) in Halifax County. Wetlands are present in all four quadrants. The original bridge is considered functionally obsolete by today’s NBIS inspection and load rating standards. The previous bridge was 52 feet long and constructed of a concrete deck on timber beams supported by timber caps and timber piles. The roadway consisted of two travel lanes 10-feet-wide with approximately two feet of grass shoulder.

The replacement bridge is a three-span prestressed precast concrete cored slab type of bridge supported by cast-in-place reinforced concrete caps supported by steel piles. The end spans are approximately 35-and 25-feet long respectively, while the center span is approximately 55 feet in length for a total length of approximately 110 feet. The proposed road improvements include widening of the travel lanes to 11 feet with four feet of grass shoulder. A&O designed the proposed grade and fill slopes to minimize impacts to the surrounding wetlands.

A&O’s in-house design staff was responsible for the roadway, drainage, and structure design, traffic control plans for offsite detours, pavement markings, erosion control plans, utility relocation plan and permit drawings. The project was accelerated and let eight months early.
