Alpha & Omega Group provided design and construction administration engineering services for the Wake County Fire Training Center pond embankment. The water in the main storage pond comes from site runoff and the recycling of water used for fire training that is piped back to settling ponds above the main storage pond.

The main storage pond is retained by a 200-foot long earthen dam across the southeast side of the pond. After gathering and analyzing data, A&O engineers discovered that trees had grown in the berm that were previously cut down, and the roots had decayed, letting water seep through the embankment. To remedy the problem, A&O recommended additional widening of the dam on the downstream side and submitted a change order to add flowable fill and surge stone to seal the existing structure per NRCS specifications.

Our construction administration team worked with the contractor, Triangle Pond Management, to draw down the impoundment before repairs could begin. Other construction administration services included scheduling and conducting a preconstruction conference and progress meetings; establishing an invoice review process; assigning change orders; coordinating approval from multiple agencies; performing substantial completion inspections; reviewing material submittals; and filing close-out documentation.
