Pursuing Excellence Through Character

When we think of character, there are usually several definitions that come to mind, from abundance of personality to someone who is fictional. However, we consider the more important definition to be the morals and habits that make us who we are. Even the original root word of character describes a ‘distinctive mark’ that sets a person apart. In our careers, our characters are our work ethics as much as what we do even when no one else is watching. It is who we are rather than what we do. For the A&O team, our motto and formula for success are key to our character as much as our work philosophy.

Begin with the End in Mind

The Team at a drafting session

Our company motto reflects on the simple choices and moments of forethought that set the patterns that construct our characters as individuals and members of the A&O team. Did we start a project with a firm understanding of the goal, or did we start developing plans with only a basic idea of the client’s needs? Do we take time to keep up with new developments in our fields so we can provide the best services for our clients? The end results of our workdays and projects are usually determined by the choices that we make before the day even starts. This is the foundation of our idea that we must begin with the end in mind. For us to live up to our motto, we must make the choices daily to be the kinds of people to truly consider not only what our clients, our team, and we need.

The Formula for Success

A team on the feild

If our motto shows us how to form our characters by knowing our goals and being prepared from the very start, our formula for success builds to show the elements we cultivate what makes a good character. Each letter in the formula shows an essential element of the character of our team. We must cultivate relationships, be trustworthy, work as a team, act as good stewards, and treat our clients the way we would want to be treated. We cannot say we have these traits when we only sometimes come together as a team or act as good stewards. To achieve excellence, the traits listed in our formula for success must be shown and cultivated so that it is who we are rather than what we do.

How We Grow Our Character

Family night at A&O

We don’t grow our characters alone. With our motto and formula as guides, Alpha & Omega Group has ways that we cultivate our characters both as individuals and as a team. Every week, our Monday Mo includes segments on how to cultivate a good character, and how we might be able to overcome our weaknesses. At least once a month, the team engages in some kind of fun activity to help us grow as a team and in our trust for one another. Every three months, we work to coach every member of our team face to face, looking over what has been working, where they’ve been struggling, and how we can give them the support they need. Just like how character is created by consistent and steady choices, our pattern of personal and professional development is designed to help us pursue an excellent character in our team and in our lives.
