As part of the governor’s flood control initiative that stemmed from record flooding during major storm events in recent years, Alpha & Omega Group conducted professional flood studies of dams within the Neuse River Basin. The goal of this study was to determine if existing dams would overtop during storm events.

A&O’s team used survey and historic data of the dam to determine the watershed area, curve number, lag time, hyetographs, the stage-storage relationship, the stage discharge relationship, and ultimately the peak reservoir elevation, inflow and outflow. We used Streamstats, ArcGIS, Excel and HEC-HMS to complete the studies, compiling the information into a hydrologic and hydraulic report for North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, Division of Energy, Mineral, and Land Resources office of Dam Safety.

A&O performed flood studies for a total of 40 dams. These H&H reports will be used for NCDEQ to better prepare the state during major storm events and reduce the risks of extreme flooding.
