After constructing the Hector H. Henry Greenway, the City of Concord needed improved pedestrian and bicycle connectivity for the greenway across the Weddington Street Bridge over Rocky River. The City asked Alpha & Omega Group to assess the bridge to determine feasibility of widening the five-foot sidewalk to a 10-foot multi-use path.

A&O performed a structural analysis of the exterior girder to determine the capacity for widening the bridge and adding a concrete barrier to separate path users from vehicle traffic. We developed schematics for three alternatives for the cantilever bridge widening and evaluated concrete, steel, and other materials to determine the best type of barrier to avoid over-stressing the girder and provide aesthetic options. For each alternative, we developed engineer’s estimates of design and construction costs for budgetary purposes.

One of the alternatives developed by A&O was a concept for a stand-alone pre-fabricated steel pedestrian bridge that shadows the bents of the existing bridge, while allowing connection with the greenway trail. We also provided construction cost estimates for this concept for budgetary purposes.

A&O delivered a report describing the three alternatives and estimated costs, along with photos.
