A&O provided hands-on, visual field inspection analysis and rating reports for nine bridges and tunnels, 32 span overhead signs, six cantilever overhead signs and 18 high mast poles for the Raleigh Durham Airport Authority in 1999, 2005 and 2009.

Coordination between the various operation entities at the airport was critical to the success of the project.  A&O staff used a bucket truck to safely inspect overhead signs and the underside of bridges. Effective traffic control allowed the public to stay on schedule and to move through the airport safely without incident while the inspection work was ongoing.  This included scheduling night inspections for areas within the terminals to further reduce any inconvenience to the public.

A&O’s approach to the inventory portion of this project was to follow the recommended inspection guidelines contained within the NBIS, NCDOT Manual, AASHTO Manual, and the FHWA Recording and Coding Guide for the Structure Inventory and Appraisal of the Nation’s Bridges. Ω
